“Cultivated blooms combined with the best that nature provides brings us closer to the land we love and makes economic and ecological sense in a modern world” – Helen.
Many businesses are borne out of a talent, skill or passion long disguised as a hobby, and the desire to take that talent to new level. Passion (and a shove from my daughter) made me realize the potential for my flower farm, the skills I could bring to the British Flower industry and the voice I could contribute to the resurgence of home-grown flowers in the UK. This is the story of Badbury Flower Company.
In 2012, our daughter Megan left home to study in America. She left behind two significant items: an empty paddock, once home to her horses, and a gift card for me to attend a taster day at a Flower School. The taster day was a pivotal moment. I raced home, or rather struggled on the bus with two wild and wonderful wreaths, to learn more about the UK-wide campaign to get British flower growers back in business and artisan floristry more widely recognised.
Years of importing flowers has decimated the home industry and dulled the nation’s senses to the amazing, scented and delicate blooms that come from our own soil. A week later, John and I set about converting the paddock into a flower farm.
The 2 acre plot adjoining our 550 year-old thatched cottage is surrounded by countryside in Somerset. We grow scented, garden flowers in a sustainable way, nurturing from seed to bloom. We complement the cultivated with the best that nature has to offer and make the most of the natural resources around us.
We work with the seasons as they gently push us on from Spring bulbs to breezy Summer bouquets, rich Autumnal sunflowers and dahlias through to handmade Somerset willow wreaths decorated with foliage and seed pods, evergreen Christmas wreaths and lush garlands.
We use the land to its full potential, work in harmony with nature, grow traditional and unusual flowers, harvest armfuls of homegrown colour and scent, and strive to bring joy to so many people on their special occasions and every day. We bring the delight of homegrown, scented flowers to everyone, whether they're planning a fabulous wedding or simply grabbing a bunch as they pass our garden gate.
Who's digging, growing the flowers and making the bouquets?
We're a small team with rigorous standards that mean you get the best flowers, and a curious nature that means we'll keep trying new things so you'll never know what's coming next.
John is a stabilising facilitator with boundless energy, a real ‘make it happen’ man when it comes to planning, building and fixing. He's always ready with words of encouragement when the going gets tough – rainy days, shovelling manure! Well, this is Somerset!
Helen, that’s me, with a love for the english garden and all the wonderful colours, shapes, fragrances and uniqueness that it offers, a resourcefulness that brings out the best of what nature provides, and a willing ear to listen to your needs.
We grow our flowers on a series of raised beds to bring you a seasonal abundance of quality blooms. Remember those wonderful garden favourites? Lupins, stocks, cosmos, roses, sweet peas, larkspur and zinnias - to name but a few. We bring a touch of the wild by adding grasses, herbs, fruit, seed pods and foliage gathered from our cottage garden and the hedgerows around us.
When you buy Badbury flowers, you can be sure they have been grown in a sustainable way. Your posy is tied with raffia or wool, your flowers arranged in a tin jug or vintage vase, or peeping over the top of a recyclable box or hessian bag. Just imagine a vintage jug filled with blooms, some tall and graceful, some tumbling – all beautiful homegrown flowers, herbs and foliage to bring your room or special occasion alive.
Why will your flowers be so special? Badbury flowers are just around the corner - no airmiles. We grow delicate varieties that are not easily found on the high street. It makes sense - we all expect our food to be sourced locally and sustainably wherever possible- so why not our flowers? With their character, scent and airy transcient nature, Badbury garden flowers look good, smell good and do good.
Get in touch, we love to talk flowers.
